Until recently open-heart surgeries were not available in Ethiopia for patients who suffered from rheumatic heart disease. Patients who needed such complex medical procedures needed to travel abroad to get surgical care. Very few people were able to afford it.
Today, trained and experienced health care professionals perform open-heart surgeries in Ethiopia with very good health outcomes, especially considering the severity of the cases. Open-heart surgery in Ethiopia costs a fraction of what it costs outside the country.
While these much-needed heart surgeries are available in the country, there are very few facilities equipped for them. They also tend to be expensive and out of the reach of the typical person living in Ethiopia.
Healing Valves is a nonprofit organization that works to prevent disease and provide cardiac care for the medically underserved poor who are impacted by rheumatic heart disease. There is a group of volunteer health care professionals ready to help these young boys and girls, but they need financial help to cover the cost of medicines, surgical supplies, and pre and post surgical care.
